While only Retina NZ members can vote on business matters, everyone is welcome to attend the event. We get the official business out of the way quite quickly then have a number of interesting speakers.



10:30am – Introduction / Roll Call / Welcome

10:40am – Official business

11.15am – Speaker – Lola Mugisho, Retina NZ Executive member and Auckland University Research Fellow. Lola will update us on NZ-based research, now in clinical trials, that might result in a non-invasive treatment where patients could simply take a pill rather than endure injections in the eye.

11.45am – Guest Speaker – Francesc March de Ribot: Dunedin-based Researcher & Consultant Ophthalmologist, Francesc will give a summary of a NZ research project funded by Retina NZ, which investigates how a treatment for inflammation in the kidney might be used to treat similar inflammation in the eye.

12:15pm – 1:15pm Lunch provided – please R.S.V.P

1.15pm Guest Speaker – Rachel Barnes; Retina SMAB member and Auckland-based Consulting Ophthalmologist, Rachel will update us on the latest research and emerging treatments for Wet & Dry AMD and Diabetic Eye Disease.

1.45pm Speaker – Paul Glover; Retina NZ Executive member, Paul will report on the latest research, for Inherited Retinal Diseases such as RP, Ushers and others. One such research stream is Optogenetics, which (in clinical trials) has been able to restore a basic level of sight to people who are totally blind.

2pm Facilitated discussion – Living with Low Vision; Group chat about living with low vision; the frustrations and challenges; your lived experiences, sharing solutions, tips and strategies (life hacks) you’ve learned as you navigate you way through daily life.


We will finish with afternoon tea and social chat from 3- 4pm
