Be confident and independent at home

Cooking, gardening, cleaning the house – these might seem daunting when you first lose your sight.  The Blind Foundation’s team will help you with these and other everyday jobs at home so you can continue living your life. Whatever you want to do, they’ll be there to help you achieve that safely and effectively.

Our specialist Adaptive Daily Living Instructors will help you learn new skills, adapt your techniques and try specialised equipment.  With their help you will gain confidence and independence.

Our individualised programmes can help you make the most of any vision you might have left, while maximising your other senses.

To start, you may want to know more about your eye condition or talk to somebody about how you are feeling.

You might also want to find out how to effectively use low vision aids.  These include items like magnifiers, canes, and talking watches.

Whether you need equipment or not, the Blind Foundation team will help you be safe at home with specific techniques and hints.   With their support you will gain confidence to continue with your day to day activities.  This can include areas like:

  • identifying and managing hazards in the home.
  • managing household tasks.
  • gardening.
  • personal care.
  • preparing and cooking meals.

Personal correspondence and banking are likely to be high on your agenda.  The team can provide you with techniques for managing those too.

Learning from lived experience can be useful.  To help, a Blind Foundation client with low vision has compiled a booklet of Hints and Tips for you to read.
