International Day of People with Disabilities is an opportunity to acknowledge those around us who are in our communities, workplaces and environments; by way of both recognising what disability they are dealing with, as well as celebrating their lives and achievements.

It is also an opportunity to raise awareness for various disabilities, common or not, so we may learn or teach how best to interact and help those affected, to highly function in our societies through partnership and co-operation.

Not all disabilities are visible. Quite a number of us could be challenged with what could seem like invisible disabilities. Neurological disorders, mental health disorders, chronic pain and chronic fatigue are some inflictions to name a few.

International Day of People with Disabilities takes place on 3 December and has been in existence for almost 30 years, since its inception in 1992.

Here at Blind Low Vision NZ, we are honoured to recognise the International Day of People with Disabilities, with the potential and possibility its purpose brings to our diverse society. Disabled or not, we are all connected.
