Christchurch-based Phillippa has been volunteering with Blind Low Vision NZ for over two years. After a rewarding career in libraries and education, she had no intention of slowing down in retirement. Now, volunteering is part of a busy life that also includes spending time with family, walking with friends, travelling to interesting places, and sailing.

Although she also volunteers with Blind Low Vision NZ’s monthly Trail Walkers group, Phillippa’s main role has been teaching members to use Alexa devices to access audiobooks, news, and music.  A typical day includes home visits, working on the most valuable skills for each member. “I feel a strong and immediate connection to the people that I visit. They welcome me into their homes and place a great deal of trust in my technical abilities and advice.” After Phillippa introduced herself on a recent follow-up call, one member immediately said, “I know who you are. I’ve been telling my friends about you!” Over a long, wet weekend, the member had been practising the skills she had learnt from Phillippa, listening to audiobooks and downloading more for the upcoming week.

Phillippa enjoys the process of overcoming any challenges she faces in her volunteering. “I do my homework before a visit, but members frequently have their own curly questions about the technology.” She loves connecting with people from all backgrounds, listening to their stories, and seeing them grow in confidence. One memory that stands out was teaching a member to ask Alexa to play classical music. “You’ve opened a whole new world for me,” the member exclaimed, beaming as music filled the room.

Through volunteering, Phillippa has gained a new appreciation for the challenges faced by those in the blind and low vision community, and the power of social connections in meeting those challenges. “Both Blind Low Vision NZ and our members are deeply grateful for the time, care, and enthusiasm Phillippa brings,” expresses Diana, Library Service and Community Engagement Coordinator. “Volunteers like her truly help bring the joy of reading to life.”

Phillippa’s advice for those looking for opportunities? “Do not hesitate to volunteer. Blind Low Vision NZ is an invaluable organisation, with a positive culture, offering clear communication and plenty of support to volunteers.”

Reflecting on her experiences to date, Phillippa says, “Volunteering for Blind Low Vision NZ has put a real spark in my life. I have loved every moment of the experience and hope that I can continue to support members for many years to come.”
