This International White Cane Day, we’re celebrating the white cane as a powerful tool of freedom, independence, and confidence. Observed every year on 15 October, this day is all about recognising the white cane’s role in enabling people who are blind, deafblind, or have low vision to navigate their world safely and independently.

The white cane isn’t just a mobility aid; it’s a global symbol of blindness and low vision. It empowers individuals to move freely, explore their surroundings, and live life on their own terms. It signals to others that the person using it may have vision loss, encouraging greater awareness, consideration, and advocacy for an inclusive, accessible world.

While the cane provides practical benefits, it also acts as a reminder that independence is crucial to a person’s dignity and quality of life. Yet, for those who use a white cane, the experience can be mixed. The cane’s visibility can lead to positive encounters, like others offering help or making space. However, it can also come with its share of misunderstandings and judgments from those who may not see beyond the disability.

This year, we’re asking you to join us in spreading the message to #SeeThePerson, not the disability – look beyond the cane and recognise the unique individuals in our community for who they are. Every person has their own story, skills, and strengths that make them so much more than their vision loss.

We’re here to support people to live the life they choose, with confidence and independence. On this International White Cane Day, let’s celebrate the resilience and abilities of those who use the white cane and continue to advocate for a world where everyone is seen for their true selves.
