Perkins Braille Typewriter — Loan and Repair Service
We keep Braille writing in reach for Blind Low Vision NZ members through a simple, free loan service and fast repairs for manual Perkins Braille Typewriters.
The Perkins Braille Typewriter and how it works
A Perkins Braille Typewriter is a sturdy, manual Braille writing machine. Its six main keys map to the six dots of a Braille cell. Pressing different key combinations embosses raised dots directly into Braille paper as it feeds across a metal platen. A space bar, backspace, line-spacing lever, and margin stops make it work much like a traditional typewriter, just for Braille.
Because it gives instant tactile feedback with every cell, a Perkins is a powerful tool for learning Braille and building accurate finger memory. It’s also great for quick notes, labels, and forms, requires no power, and is trusted for everyday, reliable Braille writing.
