A man sits on a chair outside with his white cane.

John discovered that losing his sight didn’t mean losing his independence.

“It was like a knife going through my life.” First, a bottle blew up. Years later, an aerosol can exploded. John became blind at 75 after two accidents and 50 years of farm life. “Old life gone. New one started,” he explains.

Thanks to your generous support, John has received life-changing assistance from Blind Low Vision NZ. Your kindness provided more than equipment; it connected John to a support network that transformed his world.

These days, he enjoys listening to e-books and finding new recipes on his Alexa, cooking and confidently navigating his community with his white cane. And John’s not the only one who’s happy. His wife, Sue, is delighted by his home-cooked roasts, curries, and his famous chilli con carne in his specially set-up kitchen. He even chops the firewood! “It’s amazing, really. It’s wonderful to come home and know that a meal is prepared. Just fantastic,” Sue says.

Your kindness and wonderful donations mean John is more confident and independent – living life how he chooses.
