Finding strength with four paws.

Born with Septo-Optic Dysplasia, Ethan may only be able to make out shapes, outlines and some colours, but his world is anything but small. Blind Low Vision NZ has been part of Ethan’s life since he was a baby. From white cane and mobility training to Braille and technology support, Ethan has got everything he needed to get out and live life on his terms. But the most life-changing of all? His Guide Dog Jack.

Jack arrived like a gift just after Ethan’s 21st birthday, and this handsome yellow Labrador is the best present Ethan could have imagined. More than a set of guiding eyes, Jack is a source of companionship, courage and emotional support. He senses when Ethan is overwhelmed, or when things feel hard. “I just throw myself on the floor, and Jack will lie on me,” Ethan says. “Sometimes I rest my head on him, or he rests his on me. They’re such healers. They just know.”

With Jack by his side, Ethan gets to university, rehearsals, and even national stages. He’s studied indigenous studies and is currently studying Kapa Haka history – his culture and whakapapa are central to who he is. He even competes on the National Kapa Haka competition team, representing his iwi on one of New Zealand’s biggest stages. Phew! These remarkable achievements have been made possible by your generosity. “I get to do some pretty cool stuff,” Ethan says. “Life’s amazing.”

Nothing stops Ethan and Jack, to the point that even when asked if he’d want his sight back, Ethan answers, “No. It’s made me who I am. I’m stronger for it. No matter what happens, I’m still going to get out of the house!”
