Guide Dogs

Maria + Mickey

Maria was born with congenital glaucoma and had partial sight until her early 30s, but now no longer has vision in either eye.

Initially, Marie didn’t want a guide dog – she’d always had cats – and she struggled with a different style of mobility whilst using the white cane. It took a fellow client to organise a bus stop and journey with a guide dog for her to realise that it was so much easier.

Maria has had Mickey for around seven years now and describes him as a lovely, energetic boy who loves playing tug of war and playing in different places. He’s not worried about fireworks, he’s adaptable and he likes to go on walks to the bush, sea or going on the boat.

“Having Mickey just means I can get around a lot easier,” enthuses Maria, “because I love walking and he likes walks too, so I can take him out a lot! And he’s a lovely companion to have. I’m just very lucky that I’ve been able to get all the services from Blind Low Vision and the rehab staff have always been so dedicated. They always go the extra mile, especially the guide dogs’ staff.”

Thanks to your donations, Maria’s life has changed. Maria (and Mickey) thank you from the bottom of their hearts!
