Russell’s Vision Loss Journey

Russell from Rolleston, has always embraced life with a sense of adventure and a love for learning. Despite the challenges posed by significant vision loss due to macular degeneration, Russell’s determination and the support of his family and Blind Low Vision NZ (BLVNZ) mean he can continue the activities he loves.

Before his vision began to deteriorate, Russell enjoyed reading and playing golf with his friends. However, five years ago when Russell was 79, Macular Degeneration started to take a toll on his sight.

Giving up driving was one of the hardest decisions he’s had to make. “It was hard work giving that away because I loved driving,” Russell recalls, “I used to make the trip from Oamaru to Clyde twice a year.” As his vision worsened, he started relying more on his partner but knew that he needed more support to maintain his quality of life.

That’s when Russell turned to BLVNZ for help. The support he received marked a turning point in his journey. “The team have been absolutely brilliant,” he says. “I can’t fault anyone I’ve had contact with. They are so cheerful and happy, and they’ve been great to my partner as well.”

With the help of an Adaptive Communications and Adaptive Technology Services (ACATS) Instructor, Russell learned to use accessibility apps on his smartphone, including a screen reader. “I’d be lost without it,” Russell says of the screen reader.

The team also provided him with an Alexa device, which helps him stay connected and enjoy audiobooks. “If I didn’t have talking books, I’d have nothing to fill my time,” he adds.

Through BLVNZ’s rehabilitation program, Russell has also learned to navigate the world with greater ease. He has learned how to use a white cane, cross roads safely, and even take the stairs confidently. With the ongoing support of his friends and BLVNZ, he continues to enjoy his life and even plays nine holes of golf, using coloured balls to help him follow the game.

As his sight has deteriorated further, Russell remains grateful for the support he continues to receive. “Without the team, life would be diabolical,” he says. “They’ve made such a huge difference, and I’m very grateful for everything they do.”

Russell’s story highlights his resilience and the important role of support networks. With the backing of his family and Blind Low Vision NZ, Russell has embraced his vision loss and continues to lead an active and fulfilling life. His determination has allowed him to adapt and thrive, despite the obstacles he faces.
