Steve, who lives in the sunny Nelson-Tasman region, is a man of many interests. He loves playing bowls, wrestling with his guide dog Sally, and connecting with others in the sporting community. Sport has been a big part of his life, especially within the blind and para-bowling community, where he’s built strong friendships. “The biggest prize for me is the relationships,” Steve says with a smile.
But life hasn’t always been this bright for Steve. Twenty-two years ago, he was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a progressive eye condition that causes vision loss. The diagnosis hit hard, leaving Steve in a dark place and struggling to cope. “I was on a path to self-destruction,” he recalls.
“That’s when Blind Low Vision NZ stepped in and changed everything for me. They offered me counselling, career advice, and tech support, which helped me rebuild my confidence and independence.”
“One of the most impactful things was the Orientation and Mobility training. My service provider was an absolute legend. He taught me the tools and skills I needed to navigate daily life, and those lessons are something I carry with me every day.”
“The biggest turning point, though, was being matched with Sally, my guide dog. The transition was made so much easier by my Guide Dog Mobility Instructor. She made it the best experience I could’ve asked for. Her guidance and support were invaluable, and she helped Sally and me build a strong and trusting partnership.”
“Sally’s not just my guide—she’s my life partner, and I can’t imagine life without her. She’s given me confidence, companionship, and a sense of independence I didn’t think was possible.”
“Today, I enjoy a full and active life, filled with sport, community, and family. Blind Low Vision NZ gave me hope when I needed it most, and their support has been life changing.”
Steve’s journey is a testament to determination, community, and the transformative power of practical and emotional support. It shows how, with the right support, life can be rich and fulfilling, even after a challenging diagnosis.
