Moving with confidence – our workshop with Functional Adaptive Movement and AUT
Getting active can be fun, social, and uplifting. But for someone who is blind, deafblind, or has low vision, joining in can sometimes feel hard without the right support. That’s where inclusive coaching makes a real difference.
You might already know the team at Functional Adaptive Movement – or FAM. They run movement sessions that are active, fun, and welcoming. FAM supports people with disabilities to build strength, improve their health, and feel good in their bodies. Their sessions are adapted to meet each person’s needs.
Blind Low Vision NZ recently joined a FAM-led workshop at AUT. It was part of a first-year paper called Movement Theory into Practice, designed for Sport and Exercise Science students. The course helps students apply movement theory in real-life settings, including adaptive physical activity.
At the workshop, students met the FAM team and our own Sport and Leisure staff. Together, we explored how to make sport and movement more inclusive. We also shared what everyday life can be like for people with sight loss, and the kinds of support Blind Low Vision NZ provides around Aotearoa.
The gym was buzzing with energy and curiosity. Students saw how small changes – like using clear instructions or tactile markers – can make a big impact. Our team was proud to be there, and proud to show that inclusive sport is possible and powerful.
We’re always keen to connect with schools, community groups, and the wider public. Together, we can raise awareness, support people to move with confidence, and build a more inclusive world.
