Summer at Guide Dogs has been one for the books!
Summer at Blind Low Vision NZ has been one for the books! Thanks to your support, our guide dogs have had a sun-soaked season of learning and play! Watch their adventures in the video below!
Little pups, big adventures!
Over summer, we welcomed 12 new guide dog puppies into the world! While our tiniest pups have been busy doing a whole lot of sleeping, the slightly older puppies have been keeping their paws busy exploring new surfaces and sounds. Experiencing these things early on helps them grow up to be resilient and confident, ensuring they don’t develop fears or bad habits later in life!
Summer school for our big dogs.
While the little ones are busy discovering the world, our older dogs in training have been working hard on their training! They have spent a lot of time at our specialised mobility centre, which offers a wonderful, relaxed environment where they can master new commands without the distraction of the public. This focused time is balanced with plenty of training walks through the community, allowing them to practice their navigation skills in a real-world setting.
The secret ingredient? Lots of play!
We believe that a happy dog is the best learner, so we make sure “recess” is always on the schedule! To keep our clever pups in the best mindset for training, summer enrichment is a top priority. Thanks to your support, our guide dogs have been living their best lives, from refreshing pool dates that help build water confidence, to testing out new enrichment toys and enjoying “zoomie” sessions in the sun.
These moments give them the space they need to just be dogs. By balancing hard work with plenty of play, we ensure they stay healthy, happy, and in the perfect mindset to focus on the serious business of becoming a guide!
