Art Sessions and Gallery Audio Described Tours

Where: Christchurch City Museum, Art Gallery, Theatres

Description: Guided small group tours, this is an opportunity to explore an exhibition in a small guided group, with audio describer volunteers, with coffee to finish. Register your interest to be alerted to these opportunities.

Book Talk

When: Last Tuesday of each month at 1:30pm

Where: Blind & Low Vision NZ meeting room, 96 Bristol St.

Description: An opportunity to extend your repertoire of reading material, whether on a daisy player, daisy direct, through book link or in print. Share your thoughts with others on a book chosen for discussion each month and talk about other books you have read.

Bus trip and lunch

When: Last Saturday of the month (3x per year)

Where: Blind & Low Vision NZ from 10.30am, travels to different destinations in Canterbury and returns 3pm.

Description: an opportunity to visit different areas of Canterbury and have lunch with likeminded people.

Garden Club

Indoor Blind Bowls

When: meets every Wednesday afternoon 1:15pm – 3:15pm,

Rangiora Social Group (Book Club and Walking Group)

When: meets on the third Thursday of each month, from 10am – 12pm

Where: John Knox Church Rangiora, River Rd.

Description: A social group for those local to the Rangiora area, the book club meets and discusses a new book each month, the walking group do a 30 minute walk in local area. The two groups then come together for a coffee and catch up. A $3 Koha is requested.

Rangiora Table Bowls

When: 2nd Friday of each month, 10am

Where: Rangiora Table Bowls Club

Description: Play table bowls in a supportive and social environment. Table bowls is a great sport for everyone, accessible to those with mobility limitations. There is a $3 koha each session.

Walking Group – Walking Wonderers

When: 3rd Monday of each month, from 1-3:30pm

Where: Meet at Blind & Low Vision NZ, 96 Bristol St, St Albans for shared transport to various locations in Christchurch.

Description: Keep fit, experience new environments and join this social walking group, enjoy a 40 min walk and finish off with a chat at a café. The group is a supportive environment to get into the outdoors, with staff and volunteers available to provide guiding and support.

Walking Group – Trail Walkers

When: First Tuesday of each month, 9:30 – 12.30pm.

Where: Meet at Blind & Low Vision NZ, 96 Bristol St, St Albans for shared transport to various locations in Christchurch.

Description: Keep fit, experience new environments and challenge yourself, join this lively walking group for a grunty up to 2 hour walk in the Christchurch area. The group is a supportive environment to get into the great outdoors and increase confidence, guides and support provided.

Wool Group

Description: A like minded group of people, who enjoy doing anything with wool, including sewing, knitting and crocheting, in a supportive environment.

Otago Blind Social Club

When: Meets 1.45pm – 3.30pm on 3rd Tuesday of the month in the Social hall at Blind & Low Vision NZ.

Where:Blind & Low Vision NZ building, 458 Hillside Road, South Dunedin

Description: This is not a Blind & Low Vision NZn run activity but is for Blind & Low Vision NZ members  A chance to get together socially with other members and enjoy a variety of live entertainment and speakers, followed by afternoon tea. There is also the opportunity to attend the annual Bus trip, Mid-Winter and Xmas dinners.

Cost: Annual subscription: $5 Monthly Social: $7 (for transport and afternoon tea)

Craft Group

When: Meets every Monday morning from 9.30am –11.30am

Where:  Recreation Room at Blind & Low Vision NZ, Blind & Low Vision NZ building, 458 Hillside Road, South Dunedin

Description: Members can chat and try their hand at a number of different activities, including sewing, cane work, soft toy making, weaving, leatherwork, and finger knitting. Cost; $1 for morning tea, biscuits.

Friendship Group

When: Meets every Monday afternoon from 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Where: Recreation Room of the Blind & Low Vision NZ, Blind & Low Vision NZ building, 458 Hillside Road, South Dunedin

Description: With a friendly atmosphere, the occasional quiz, games and outings thrown into the mix, this group revolves around discussions on topical and historic events, companionship and the sharing of life experiences. Afternoon tea is shared among members on a rotational basis. Cost  $2 for group fund, + $2 for transport.

Otago Blind Indoor Bowls Club

When: Begins first Saturday in April and runs through to first Saturday in November. Club days are Saturdays from 1.00pm to 3.00pm in the

Where: Blind & Low Vision NZ Social Hall.

Description: This is not a Blind & Low Vision NZ run activity but is for Blind & Low Vision NZ members. No previous experience necessary, full coaching and tuition provided. The club caters for those who just want to come along for a roll up and to learn the game, right through to those who are aiming to participate in the Blind and Visually Impaired National Championships.

Cost:   annual subscription of $20, no weekly mat charge

Blind Fingers Garden Group

When: Meets the 1st Tuesday of every month from 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Where:Blind & Low Vision NZ Recreation room.

Description: The group holds discussions and offers advice on a wide range of gardening topics and techniques for gardening with a vision impairment.  There are also regular guest speakers invited to speak on a range of horticultural, agricultural and gardening topics or happenings in the Dunedin region as well as occasional visits to local gardens, parks or nursery’s. This group is for any member who has an interest in gardening and plants, even if they are no longer an active gardener.

Cost: $2 for afternoon tea/speakers gift.

Taieri / Mosgiel Social Group

When: Meet 2nd Thursday of the month, 2.00pm – 3.30pm

Description: This group meets at the Mosgiel Presbyterian Church, Church St, Mosgiel for a social afternoon of entertainment and conversation. Mid-Winter and Xmas functions are also organised through the year. Cost $5 for afternoon tea/transport

Choir

When: Meets every 2nd Monday evening, 7.00pm – 9.30pm

Where:Blind & Low Vision NZ.

Description: This group get together for singing and friendship. Supported by guitarists, members sing a variety of old and new songs. There is no charge for this activity group.

Tuesday Walking Group

When: Meets at 10.15am every fortnight on Tuesdays

Where:Blind & Low Vision NZ.

Description: This is a group for those who enjoy getting out for a leisurely stroll and is particularly suited to those members who are unable to walk for extended periods of time or over longer distances. They meet for short walks (anything from 10 – 45 minutes catered for) and an occasional coffee at a cafe. Usually back by 12 noon. There is no charge for this activity group.

Book Group

When: Meets 2nd Tuesday of each month from 1.30pm 3.30pm

Where: The Yates Room at the Blind & Low Vision NZ.

Description: This group discuss, review and learn about the books that members have been reading. It is also an opportunity to share knowledge, points of view and tips/information about the resources available for low vision readers. There is no charge for this activity group.

Blinkies Wednesday Walking Group

When: Meet by 10.30am

Where:Blind & Low Vision NZ every fortnight on a Wednesday (Alternate week to Tuesday Group).

Description: This group explores different walks and tracks in and around the greater Dunedin area and is suited to those who are able to walk for 2 to 3 hours or more. The group leaves Blind & Low Vision NZ at 10.30am and returns around 2.30pm. Members need to bring a backpack, sturdy footwear, lunch, drink and clothing for changeable weather.  Cost Donation of $5 for transport when travelling outside of the city area is suggested.

Blind Mice Walking Group

When: Meeting on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

Description: This group explores different walks and tracks in and around the greater South Otago area and is suited to those who are able to walk for 2 to 3 hours or more. The group leave Balclutha around 10.00am and usually return by 2.30pm, depending on destination. Members need to bring a backpack, sturdy footwear, lunch, drink and clothing for changeable weather.

Cost: Variable, in relation to destination to be advised by volunteer phone call prior.

Long Lunch Group

When: Meet on the last Friday of the month.

Where: Travel to various cafes or pubs in the South Otago region for lunch.

Description: Venue, meeting time and transport will be advised and arranged by volunteers a week prior to the event. Cost; Purchase your own lunch and a small donation for volunteer transport if used.

Tea & Chat

When: Meet on the 2nd Tuesday of every odd numbered month, 2.00pm – 3.30pm.

Monthly Social Group

When: Meet on the last Tuesday of the month.

Where: Various locations.

Description: Meet for afternoon tea, chat, entertainment and occasional outings to various locations in the Central Otago Area. Transport is available from Cromwell, Roxburgh and Alexandra to most destinations. Purchase of your own refreshments and for outings a small charge may be required for transport. A volunteer with details of the month’s activity will call members, the week prior. Cost; variable depending on activity and location.

Bi-Monthly Social

When: On the 3rd Thursday of every ‘odd’ month from 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Description: Entertainment, afternoon tea and socialising opportunities provided. There are the occasional Saturday functions, bus trips and dinners to look forward to as well. Cost $5.00 for Social afternoon tea and $1.00 for raffles.
