Lance Girling-Butcher, former editor of the Taranaki Herald and Taranaki Daily News, launches the ‘Talking about Seeing’ series on Access Radio’. Members of the Blind Low Vision NZ Taranaki Community Committee have worked together on this project.

“There are a number of people who have led interesting lives, and whose stories deserve to be recorded for others to listen and learn. We feel that these will contribute to other people learning more about life with limited or no sight” Spokesman and coordinator, Geoff Aiken said.

The stories you will hear will pass on tips dealing with sight loss and help the rest of the community understand the needs of people who are blind, deafblind or have low vision. ‘Talking about Seeing’ will also break stereotypes and misconceptions about people who experience sight loss.

“The group includes people who have been blind since birth, people who have gone blind after creative and useful lives, and partners and friends who provide support”

These real stories are proof that people do live fulfilling and rewarding lives after losing their sight. Access Radio Taranaki 104.40 FM will broadcast these conversations every Monday at 5pm starting Monday 23 May.

The National Library will then store these stories as audio recordings for people to continue to enjoy.
