Meet Allan Jones

Father of two, grandfather of five, and great grandfather of one, Allan lives life to the full. His passions include music, especially folk tunes, playing around on his computer, and venturing out to a cosy café whenever he craves a decent cup of coffee.

Allan was born with Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), a rare, inherited eye disorder which limits his sight to only being able to distinguish light from darkness. Learning to accept and embrace his condition from an early age has meant that he is able to navigate the world and indulge his interests. Frustration has no part in Allan’s busy life. After graduating from Victoria University with a BA in Psychology and Sociology and beginning his career as a psychiatric social worker, he successfully moved to London for three years in the vibrant 1970s.

Commitment to making a positive impact, Allan still dedicates six hours a week as a support worker, helping individuals facing challenging behaviors.

Allan’s relationship with our organization began when he was a young child of four, eager to learn braille and gain literacy. Over the years, he has found tremendous value in the support and technology we provide, allowing him to stay connected to the world around him. His trusty companions include his computer, iPhone, and Alexa, which he lovingly describes as “amazing pieces of technology.” The guidance our staff has given him on utilizing these devices has been a game-changer for Allan, enabling him to fully participate in the modern world. In his own words, “I can’t imagine going out without my cane and my iPhone. They are two incredibly important tools.” Allan’s trusty cane has been his loyal companion throughout his life, a reliable aid that empowers him on his daily adventures.
