For years, Blind Low Vision NZ has been a place where those who are blind, deafblind, or have low vision have found support and connection through community. The Kids Camps have been no exception, encouraging blind, deafblind, and low vision children to step outside their comfort zones, develop friendships, and build confidence and independence. Read what the Kids Camps meant to client Grace as a child.
“I became a member of Blind Low Vision NZ when I was 10 years old. At age 11, I was given the chance to attend my first Kids Camp and, although it was scary to be away from home, I’m so fortunate I had that opportunity. I went on to attend Blind Low Vision NZ’s Kids Camp every year I could.
I made life-long friends and learnt so many skills around independence, leadership, and empathy, as well as a ridiculous number of practical skills like kayaking, fishing, and performing. I didn’t have the opportunities at school to take part in these activities, so it was incredible when I was not only allowed, but encouraged to scale the rock wall, jump in the water, or take centre stage.
The camps allowed me to connect with other children who were blind, deafblind, or have low vision and proved to me I wasn’t alone on my vision loss journey. There was, and still is, such a community that I could go to when I needed some peer support. It removed the isolation I felt. The camps have a unique and powerful ability to empower children in a way that makes a real difference to them.”
