Following the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care, the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind is organising a formal public apology event for known survivors who experienced abuse while in our care. This event underscores our sincere regret and commitment to addressing the historical harm caused to members of the blind, deafblind, and low vision community between 1950 and 1999.
The Royal Commission’s report highlighted the unacceptable experiences of many in state and faith-based care, and we acknowledge with deep sorrow the specific instances of abuse and neglect that occurred within our organisation during that period. The RNZFB Board and Blind Low Vision NZ leadership unreservedly apologise for the abuse inflicted upon children and adults entrusted to our care.
This public apology event for known survivors is a direct response to the Royal Commission’s recommendations and reflects our dedication to engaging with and acknowledging the experiences of affected communities. We are committed to learning from the past and have been diligently reviewing our policies and practices to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals we serve.
We are currently in the process of organising this important event and will be directly contacting known survivors with detailed information regarding the date, time, and location. For those who believe they or a family member may have been affected and wish to be included, please contact us at 0800 24 33 33 or email info@rnzfb.org.nz.
We understand and acknowledge that this apology may evoke strong emotions. This event is a significant step in our journey towards reconciliation and healing, and we are resolute in our commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all members of the blind, deafblind, and low vision community.
