Jim and Mary are long-time volunteer boarders who have opened their home, and their hearts to more than 60 guide dogs since 2011.
Living near the Blind Low Vision NZ Guide Dog Centre, they provide safe, loving care for dogs needing emergency boarding, rest and recovery, or a calm environment during training. Whether it’s for a weekend or several months, their peaceful home is a welcome retreat. Their warmth, reliability, and gentle nature make them an incredible support to our Guide Dog Services team, and to every dog lucky enough to stay with them.
Mary has lovingly scrapbooked a page for every dog they’ve cared for over the years. Looking through these keepsakes brings back wonderful memories, each one full of personality and heart. Here’s a reflection from Mary about their boarding journey:
“We started boarding with Zoro, a German Shepherd, in 2011. He was our first and what a beautiful boy he was. Since then, we’ve had 64 wonderful dogs stay with us. Each one has brought joy and character to our lives, from cabbage-stealing duos at Christmas to poodles who love Country Calendar.”
“We love them all. People often ask how we can bear to give them back. The truth is, we’re proud foster parents. It’s a joy to be part of their journey toward changing someone’s life.”
From fishing boat adventures to dressage events, from helping anxious dogs settle to sending off retired ones in style, Jim and Mary have done it all.
To Jim and Mary — thank you. For your time, your care, and the countless “tails” you have to tell.
