Vision loss is often a gradual and sneaky process that can leave people feeling isolated, scared and helpless. It can significantly impact a person’s daily life and independence, whether it’s reading a book, navigating through unfamiliar spaces, or even grocery shopping. Unfortunately, vision loss affects a significant portion of New Zealanders with over 180,000 people who are blind, deafblind, or have low vision. The numbers are expected to increase to 225,000 by 2028 as our population ages.

Gail’s Story of Hope and Resilience

Gail was diagnosed with Stargardt disease when she was just 12 years old. It’s an inherited eye disease that slowly takes away vision, which left Gail feeling isolated and fearful for her future. Blind Low Vision NZ provided her with essential services including white cane training and training on the use of adaptive technology, to help her live independently and achieve her goals.

“When I was 16, I worked in a café, and I thought, ‘one day I want to have one of my own,’” Gail remembers. “When I was 57, I finally did! I had my café for two years.”

Today, Gail is 74 years old, a mother of three, and a grandmother of six. Although she eventually had to step away from her café due to her vision loss, she’s still living independently and vibrantly. She accesses essential services that Blind Low Vision NZ provides, like practical training, daily-living skills, mobility training, and a volunteer shopper who accompanies her for a weekly grocery shop.

“When I was first diagnosed, I thought it was the end of the world. But thanks to the support from Blind Low Vision NZ I soon realised that it’s just a change in your world!”
