In 2026, we recognise the International Year of the Volunteer (IVY 2026), a global moment to celebrate the impact of volunteers and strengthen the systems that support them.
Blind Low Vision NZ volunteers play a vital role in supporting connection, independence, and inclusion in communities across Aotearoa. IVY 2026 is an opportunity to recognise that contribution in meaningful ways, while also looking ahead to how volunteering can be supported for the future.
Around the world, millions of people volunteer their time, skills, and care every day. Volunteers strengthen communities, support wellbeing, and help create a sense of belonging.
IVY 2026 invites organisations to go beyond saying thank you, and to focus on:
- Recognition that is personal and local
- Volunteering as participation and connection
- Strong support, leadership, and good volunteer practice
What IVY 2026 means for Blind Low Vision NZ
For Blind Low Vision NZ, IVY 2026 is not a one-off campaign. It is a call to:
- Shine a light on the people who volunteer across our services and communities
- Recognise volunteers in ways that feel genuine and grounded
- Strengthen how volunteering is supported, now and into the future
Throughout 2026, our IVY activity will focus on three guiding principles:
- Local and meaningful recognition
- We will highlight volunteering in ways that reflect real people, real places, and real impact.
- Participation and belonging
- Volunteering is about connection to others, to community, and to purpose.
- Building for the future
- We will use IVY 2026 to strengthen the foundations that support volunteering beyond this year.
