We’re excited to share news of the successful long-distance match between Andy and beautiful guide dog, Granger.
Blind Low Vision NZ worked in partnership with our friends ‘across the ditch’ at Guide Dogs Queensland, to bring Andy and his perfect match together. Thanks to your kindness and a comprehensive, cross-Tasman training program, Andy and Granger are now fully qualified and working as a team.
The match making process between guide dogs and guide dog handlers is complex, as we want to ensure that they both suit each other’s lifestyle and needs. And our good friends at Guide Dogs Queensland jumped at the chance to help bring Andy and guide dog Granger together when it was determined they would be a perfect match.
Granger is Andy’s fourth guide dog after his previous dogs retired after their many years of service. After waiting two years for a perfect match, the news that a guide dog had been found for him in Australia was so exciting. Andy couldn’t wait to get on the plane for the 3,000km trip to meet his new best friend!
“Meeting Granger for the first time was very special. I just knew he was the right dog for me – I can’t explain it. We bonded so quickly, and he was ready to get into training with me right away.”
Training on both sides of the Tasman has been a unique experience for everyone, and we are thrilled to share with you that Andy and Granger did an amazing job. They now spend their days walking around Blenheim together, safely. “Granger is a very happy dog who has found a perfect balance of work, play and love,” says Andy.
